Adapting segmentation rules for another language variant
The following can be read in the memoQ Help online:
What does that actually mean? This is from the page on editing segmentation rulesets, but how are you to apply that information, if at all? What does it tell you about using a segmentation ruleset designated for generic English in a project with US English as its source language?
Nothing, really. And that is a problem for many people. This section and the discussion from the second open office hour on memoQ segmentation are intended to clear up the confusion created by ambiguous help texts, missing information in the documentation and a generally haphazard approach to training.
Every segmentation ruleset has a designated "language"
There is currently (as of memoQ 10.3) no possibility to use a segmentation ruleset created for one language variant, such as German for Germany ("ger-DE" in the screenshot above), in a project for another variant of the same language (such as generic German, "ger" or Austrian German, "ger-AT") without changing the code for the language in the resource editor.
The external MQRES resource file with the desired language designation must then be imported to memoQ (in the Resource Console, memoQ Options, Server Administrator or Project Settings) and subsequently be configured for use in a project or template or as a default for local or online projects. Any comments in that file will be stripped out of the imported copy.
Unfortunately, as of memoQ version 10.3, there is no way to change that language code from within memoQ and its integrated segmentation rules editor. The change must be made in an external text editor using an exported segmentation resource (MQRES file) or, more sensibly, in resources that are developed and maintained in such an editor outside of memoQ, which also enables comments to be added to the resource for documentation and maintenance purposes.
Consult the current memoQ Help online on the "supported languages" page to find the proper language codes to use if you are uncertain or experience difficulties.
